F.A.Q.
Regarding...

Auditions:

Q.  Who will judge the auditions?

A.  Sir James will select the performers.  We will send the applications to him in Switzerland.

Q.  In the audition instructions, you mention six Taffanel studies.  Which ones are these?  And will the class performers be expected to know these from memory?

A.  They are from Taffanel-Gaubert Complete Method, Part 5,  the 24 Progressive Studies, Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7.  If you have the two-volume version, they are in Volume 2. If you are selected to perform, Sir James will expect you to have good familiarity with these six studies on the day of the class -- you do not need to memorize them.  We can provide you with this music if you do not have it.

Teen Event:

Q.  Is there a wait list for the Teen Event, since it has sold out?

A.  Yes.  If you want to be added to the wait list for the Teen Event, please click here to send us an e-mail.

Q.  What should I bring to the teen masterclass?

A.  Please bring your flute, the music for the teen class, and a portable music stand.  If you are coming to COPIA with an adult who is not your own parent, you must bring an activity waiver signed by your parent or legal guardian.  (You can download the Teen Waiver from our Downloads page.)

Attire:

Q.  Is there a dress code for the masterclass?

A.  For adults, casual but neat attire is requested.  Teens who will perform in the afternoon are asked to wear white shirts and dark pants or skirts, if possible.  If that is difficult, please just wear something comfortable but nice.  (You will appear in an ensemble performance as well as in the class photograph).

Comings and Goings:

Q.  I will be late in arriving and/or must leave early.  Is that alright?

A.  The theater is initimate and is designed in way that may make entering and exiting during class distracting for the teacher and performers.  (The stage is not elevated or separated from the seats.)  For this reason, you will want to be sure you are comfortable before you take your seat for the event.  If you arrive late or have stepped out for some reason, our volunteer ushers may ask you to enter through the upstairs door and watch temporarily from the balcony.

This is a full-day class and not a drop-in event, however, we know that some musicians have matinee performances and can stay only for the morning session.  If you cannot stay for the afternoon session, please let us know in advance.

Q.  What is the schedule for the day?  Is there reserved seating?  When does the theater open?

A.     Check-in is between 9:00 and 10:00 in the COPIA Theater lobby.  The theater doors will open at approximately 9:40 for registrants to take their seats.  Several rows in the front are reserved for the class performers and VIP's.  The rest of the seating is unassigned.

Here is an approximate schedule for the day:

Class begins at 10:00, with adults and teens together in the COPIA Theater.  Group warm-ups will be during the first hour of the class.  Teen Event enrollees will leave the theater at 11:00, for a teen masterclass with Lady Galway in the Staglin Room, lasting until 1:00.  During this same time, Sir James will lead the adult masterclass in the theater, working with individual performers.

The lunch break is from 1:00 - 1:40 for teens, and from 1:00 - 2:00 for adults.  Lunch may be purchased at COPIA in the Garden Cafe or in Julia's Kitchen restaurant.

Teen Event participants reconvene from 1:40 - 3:30 for their afternoon session, which includes flute choir rehearsal.   Adults recovene for the afternoon session of Sir James' class  from 2:00 - 3:30  in the theater.

At 3:30, there will be a brief concert, which includes a performance by the teens followed by a short performance by the Galways.  Class ends at 4:00 and is followed by autorgraphs and photos with the Galways in COPIA's lobby.
